Valois originated as the studio project of Charles Hoppner in Toronto in 2012 and quickly caught the attention of publications like BlogTO and Silent Shout for their dark brand of synth-tinged bedroom pop. Valois relocated to Ottawa in 2015 with the release of Love Dies But You Won’t, and have subsequently brought their high-energy live show to festivals like Marvest and Megaphono as well as supporting artists like Dent May, Monowhales, Nyssa, Lakes of Canada in shows throughout Canada and Europe. Their 2017 record “We’re All In This Together But You” hit number one on the local college radio charts and was named #15 on Apartment613’s top local albums ranking for 2018.
Inspired in equal parts by classic glam rock, modern indie, outsider art and drag, Valois strives to break down barriers and binaries through their theatricality and musicianship. They are set to release a new full-band record in 2020 that draws inspiration from the indie rock of their teenage years as well as the classic pop sounds of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Exploring themes of nostalgia, youth, adulthood, friendship, love, gender, imperialism, and celebrity, their new music imbues their sweet pop sound with both humour and gravity.
Originally spurred from the home tape recordings of Louie Kiley and Vinny Marksohn, Bleach Day released their full-length debut, Where to Dream, in 2016. Its release was met with praise from blogs such as Earmilk and Buried Muse (now Idle House). Seven Days called the album “…an eight-song sonic tapestry of analog whirrs, screwy samples and, at its core, beautiful, sun-bleached lo-fi pop.”
Since the release of Where to Dream, Bleach Day has appeared as a five-piece band at festivals such as POP Montreal and Waking Windows. Behind the scenes, the duo earned production, engineering, and performance credits on Wished Bone’s 2018 “Cellar Belly,” engineered Sparklesaurus’ 2018 self-titled LP, and tracked or performed on numerous local Vermont artists’ tracks.
Bleach Day’s sophomore LP, “as if always” is due to be released March 6, 2020 on Birdwatcher Records. It is the product of a two year studio binge, occurring in between the band’s numerous other recording projects. Mixing classic golden age pop sounds, cinematic progressions, and oddball tones, “as if always” composes a sonic language that takes the listener through a story of growth and self discovery in its most primeval form, which mirrors a full life cycle from birth to death. Through struggle you learn to confront your fears, your shadows, and your limitations to become the person you are meant to be. It’s a journey to a place that feels far away – until you realize it’s actually within yourself, and always has been.
