The Savoy Society of Ottawa is busy working on their production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s IOLANTHE (eye-oh-lan-thee). It is a fun musical show with all kinds of topical jokes, including recent news events relating to the House of Commons and the Senate. The story is about the Victorian-era Upper House in England where lots of the same problems are still occurring today…. including our own Senator Mike Duffy. Dancing and singing with an orchestra in a lighthearted way and fun for the whole family.
The show will be held at Cedarview Alliance Church – May 27, May 28 and May 29. Larger than life fairies, who can be like naughty children at times, are pitted against the male Peers which is the British name for the Senators (not the hockey team). In G&S musicals, like Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, there is always a young couple who are not allowed to marry until the end of the show because of some silly misunderstanding. For musical aficionados, G&S always includes a patter song (think a Victorian-Era rap) and a beautiful a capella quartet/quintet.
Savoy is pleased to have legendary performer, Sneezy Waters, who will perform the song “Foolish Questions” woven into the G&S story.
