Shoegaze and indie rock quartets Semaphore and Bonsai Trees are making their first trips to Canada from the US on this summer’s Leave and Learn tour. June 13th sees the bands coming into Ottawa at Bar Robo with support from Dreamshell. Semaphore and Bonsai Trees will be supporting their new EP and LP respectively.
Bonsai Trees: Connecticut Indie Rock
Bonsai Trees is a Hartford, CT band founded in 2011. Often categorized as indie-rock with speckles of emo influence, Bonsai Trees puts on electrifying performances with biting, raw energy- while simultaneously managing to craft tunes with infectious melodies that will be rolling around in your head for days after the show. In October 2017 they released their sophomore LP Not Bitter, and are hard at work on a third, due out Spring 2019.
Dreamshell: Ottawa Shoegaze/Psyche
Dreamshell is the product of a long-time collaboration between friends Johnny McArthur and Eric Moore. Over the years, the duo’s music has evolved into what is now their searing, lo-fi sound. Their music exists at the intersection of shoegaze and psych rock, with experimentalism always at the forefront.
Semaphore: Brooklyn Shoegaze/Post-Hardcore
Between jazz saxophone transcriptions and chemical engineering problem sets, Siddhu Anandalingam decided that the only way he had time to explore his musical interests would be to combine his varied musical tastes – thus Semaphore was born. Drawing from the musicality and social commentary of artists like Pink Floyd, Tycho, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Smashing Pumpkins, M83, and Tigran Hamasyan, Semaphore’s music is intricate, lush, and hard to pin down to any one genre. Check it out and you will hear a combination of all the best parts of 90s grunge with floaty shoegaze vocals, delayed guitar effects, glued together with subtle jazz chord voicings and great production.
